What do we mean by `Family Life`?

'Family Life' can mean many things for different people but one thing’s for sure – families bring both happiness and stress! SEHLI believes that all parents need assistance at some point and so provides services to offer:

  • someone outside the family to chat to or let off steam
  • information or suggestions for dealing with specific 'child' issues
  • encouragement to put themselves first for a change

Here is a rundown of current or future Family Life services . . .

Stress Busters is a course which helps parents reduce every day stress levels by learning simple tips and relaxation. One parent said, "Stress Busters made me realise that I can’t always stop the stress but I can deal with it in ways which are better for my family."

A Parent Support Group has been running for parents of S1-S4 young people, where lunch is provided with lots of informal chat and laughter. A regular parent said, "It makes a difference just hearing that other teenagers are the same as mine. Sometimes another parent tells you how they dealt with a situation which gives you new ideas."

A new Complementary Therapy Service is starting soon which can only be accessed by people who are experiencing mental health difficulties or emotional stress. You must approach a worker who assists you with your difficulty, to be referred for an appointment.

Coming soon to a school near you is relaxation courses for parents and children in P1-P3. These courses are due to start in Autumn 2005.

Why not try these top tips for busting stress – they actually work!

    1.   Cut down on your caffeine, alcohol and sugar intake. These can affect your energy levels and mood.

    2.    Do one thing at a time. Plan ahead, write lists and give out tasks to other people where you can.

    3.    Don’t feel guilty about doing something each day for yourself, ie. having a bath or going for a walk.

    4.    Practice breathing lower down in your stomach (your stomach should rise when you breathe in) to slow yourself down. Practice it even at the bus stop!

    5.    And finally, believe that you can control your stress – don’t give it the power to control you.
